What is radiofrequency ablation?
This minimally invasive varicose vein treatment procedure relies on electricity to heat the veins which eventually collapse and seal off completely.
How is RFA performed?
Ultrasound is used to guide the procedure. The leg is injected with a local anesthetic, and a small needle punctures the vein. A catheter will be inserted into the vein and more numbing medication will be injected around the vein. Once the numbing medication is placed around the catheter and vein, the catheter will slowly be pulled back. During the time the catheter generates heat, the vein is closed off.
What can I expect post-procedure?
Most RFA patients report that there is a marked difference after RFA within a few days and that their legs feel lighter. That said, varicose veins take a bit of time to fully go away, depending on their severity and how long you’ve had them.
